Preston North End held league leaders Wolves to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon in a match that saw Alex Neil's side finish the match with ten men after John Welsh was dismissed for two yellow cards.

Neil was clearly unhappy with the antics of some Wolves players and the part they played in Welsh's dismissal.

He said to the Express and Star: "The likes of Wolves they've got a lot of soft foreign players haven't they? I think a lot of them go down and look as if they're really hurt and makes the referee think the challenge is worse than it actually is.

"You can guarantee they're going to bounce back up within seconds and that's exactly what happened. It seems to be every time there was a free kick a booking would follow.

"John got himself got sent-off and I thought the two bookings were soft to be honest. The way the Wolves players go down and roll around it looks like they are really hurt, making the referee think it was a really bad tackle when in actual fact it was an honest attempt to get the ball."

The paper's Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers has had his say on Neil's comments and it is far to say that he does not agree.

He felt - like me - that the red card decision was fully justified and also turned the spotlight back onto Neil's side, for time wasting while others have also brought up Preston's poor disciplinary record themselves.

The Verdict

Both incidents that led to Welsh's red card were yellow cards so I don't really understand why Neil thinks he has a leg to stand on.

More generally, his comments feed into the insinuation that foreign players are somehow more devious and deceptive than British ones - while the way Dele Alli won a penalty against Rochdale yesterday would suggest otherwise.

It is also feeds into the idea that they are not up for it as much as British players and that is something I take exception to as well.
