Leeds United don’t look like they will be signing Steven Caulker, despite the Whites looking to add a centre-back to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad between now and the end of the transfer window.

According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog this morning (08/08, 08:46), Leeds were battling with Rangers to secure Caulker’s service, with the Whites reportedly willing to pay £1.5m for the centre-back.

However, Phil Hay at the Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that he has been told Leeds will not be signing the Dundee centre-back to end their search for reinforcements.

At the current time, Leeds have Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson as recognised centre-backs, but have a number of others who can step into defence.

Gaetano Berardi partnered Liam Cooper against Stoke City on Sunday, with Jansson lacking fitness.

Marcelo Bielsa has also experimented with Kalvin Phillips in a three-man defence, whilst Luke Ayling and Conor Shaughnessy have played there for Leeds in the past.

One man who is on Leeds’ radar is Matthew Pennington, the Everton defender who spent last season on-loan with the Whites.

The 23-year-old is attracting interest from Elland Road, with Leeds keen to take him on-loan again, according to the YEP.

The Verdict

The general feeling around Elland Road is that Leeds need another recognised centre-back, either on-loan or permanently.

Of course, the loan deadline is extended until the end of the month, but Leeds don’t seem to be making too much progress at this current time.

The Whites need to act quickly to get another body through the door.
