Sunderland have made a late breakthrough in their efforts to sign Wigan striker Will Grigg and it's been revealed that it could cost Jack Ross' side £3-4m, according to Keith Downie.

The Sky Sports journalist revealed just how much it could cost Sunderland to strike a deal with the in-demand forward on Deadline Day.

Some supporters will feel that this is a panic buy from Sunderland for Grigg, but if he can score the goals to fire Sunderland back into the Championship at the first time of asking, then it's a gamble worth taking.

The Black Cats have been in the market for a striker since Josh Maja departed the Stadium of Light in favour of a move to Bordeaux.

Grigg is a proven goalscorer at League One level and played a crucial role in firing Wigan back into the Championship in previous seasons.

The 27-year-old has struggled for game time with Wigan this season and has been limited to just ten league starts for the Latics, which is bound to be frustrating for the Northern Irish international.

It remains to be seen as to whether the deal will have been completed in time for the 11pm deadline which has just passed, but if Sunderland get their man, then they will be delighted, regardless of the price being quoted to sign Grigg.

The Verdict

It's quite a hefty price tag for Grigg.

Yes I agree that he's a proven goalscorer, but I just don't see the value in this deal for Sunderland.

It'll be interesting to see how much this deal will cost them if the transfer gets announced in the next coming days.
