Newcastle United haven’t made bids to sign either Andre Ayew or Matt Phillips this summer, despite Rafa Benitez still looking to make an impact in the summer transfer window.

Plenty of speculation is surrounding Newcastle at this current time, but Lee Ryder from The Chronicle has denied that the Magpies have bids in for Ayew and Phillips.

Both were part of relegated squads from the Premier League last season, with Ayew dropping into the Championship with Swansea City and Phillips returning to the second-tier as part of West Bromwich Albion’s squad.

Both attack-minded players have good attributes though, with the duo having the potential to thrive in a better Premier League squad.

Ayew, 28, made the switch from West Ham United to Swansea last January, but has struggled adapting to life back in Wales.

27-year-old Phillips has been with West Brom over the last two years and has over 50 Premier League appearances under his belt for the Baggies.

Last season, the winger featured in 30 of West Brom’s 38 fixtures in the Premier League, scoring two goals and registering a further two assists.

Currently, both Ayew and Phillips are preparing for the 2018/19 Championship season, which begins in early August.

The Verdict

Ayew and Phillips struggled last season for their respective clubs, but there’s no denying that the duo have enough talent to thrive in a better squad.

At the top of their game, they’d be useful additions to a number of Premier League sides.

In terms of Newcastle, supporters will be disappointed to learn that Rafa Benitez doesn’t have bids in for either player, as they want to see some movement in the transfer window.
