Abel Hernandez remains Leeds United’s No.1 striking target this summer, but there hasn’t been any progress in their quest to secure a deal for the Hull City striker.

Leeds’ interest in Hernandez is known, with the Yorkshire Evening Post revealing earlier this month that the striker was on the Whites’ radar.

The 27-year-old looks set to leave Hull permanently this summer, with his contract at the KCOM Stadium expiring.

Lee Sobot from the YEP has now provided an update on Leeds’ quest to strike a deal for Hernandez, confirming that whilst Leeds’ interest is known, there’s very little progress.

Hernandez remains Leeds’ first choice, but the Whites have alternatives they could turn to if they fail to secure the eight-goal striker’s signature.

Reports that Aston Villa were leading the race to sign Hernandez coincided with Leeds’ interest in the Uruguayan.

Steve Bruce, Villa’s boss, worked with Hernandez at Hull.

Villa lost Saturday’s play-off final with Fulham 1-0, with Tom Cairney’s goal enough to guide Fulham to promotion.

It remains to be seen what Villa’s next move is following their play-off defeat.

The Verdict

This is a key deal for Leeds to be working on this summer, as Hernandez could potentially transform the outlook of their forward line next season.

Villa’s interest is a worry, particularly now their season is finished.

Leeds could’ve moved ahead in negotiations whilst Villa fought for promotion, but they don’t appear to be any further down the line following this update.

It’s a big couple of months for Leeds.
