Leeds United midfielder Madger Gomes played a key role for the Whites in the August thrashing of League Two side Newport County in the League Cup, but has failed to appear for the first-team since the mauling of the Welsh outfit.

The 21-year-old has appeared regularly for the reserve side at Elland Road, yet despite a solid performance in the cup, failed to break into the first-team under former boss Thomas Christiansen.

BBC journalist Adam Pope shared on Twitter that the Spanish-born youngster played in a behind closed doors friendly for the U23’s against Bradford City, in a match the Whites emerged as 3-0 winners.

The absence of Gomes following his Newport display has stumped many, with Pope believing the player to simply have been out of favour under Christiansen.

The Verdict

Gomes played the full ninety minutes in the win over Newport, and the fact that he hasn’t even had a sniff of the first-team is very strange.

The former Spain U18 international looked solid, and if out of favour and not in contention to break into the first-team squad, some may wonder why the player was not allowed to leave on loan in January.

Perhaps the youngster stands a better chance of a call up under new boss Paul Heckingbottom, but questions remains as to whether there is an underlying issue that has restricted Gomes’ progression into a regular at Elland Road.
