Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t appear to be pushing for Leeds United to recruit a centre-back between now and the transfer deadline on August 31.

The window for permanent transfers to be completed closed earlier in the month, but EFL clubs are still able to add players on loan between now and the end of the month.

Centre-back is one area where Leeds haven’t strengthened yet this summer, but Bielsa doesn’t seem interested in recruiting an extra body to that part of his squad, according to Phil Hay from the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Currently, Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson are Leeds’ only recognised centre-backs, but Gaetano Berardi has partnered the former so far this season.

However, Jansson has picked up a back injury that will force him out of tonight’s clash with Swansea, which Hay admits could force Bielsa into strengthening his options.

Matthew Pennington is an option that Leeds have looked at, with the YEP reporting that there was an interest in the Everton centre-back.

Pennington spent last season on-loan at Elland Road, with the 23-year-old managing 24 Championship appearances under Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom.

The Verdict

Leeds are short of options at centre-back, so Bielsa’s stance might surprise some.

However, Bielsa has so much experience, and those that might doubt him, need to just trust the Argentinian here.

If things aren’t looking as good when January comes around, Bielsa’s stance could very well change.

Leeds fans… Thoughts?
