Reputable journalist Alan Nixon has tweeted that Leeds United are still in the hunt for Derby County's Matej Vydra as they hunt a Premier League spot under Marcelo Bielsa.

Nixon claims that although Leeds are in the hunt, the two clubs are still some way apart on their valuation of the player. Finance will play a part, it was suggested that Leeds couldn't afford both Vydra and Abel Hernandez.

Vydra scored 21 times for Derby County last season as they finished in the top six, but couldn't find the goals to defeat Fulham over a two-legged semi-final. In his two seasons prior to that he scored just eight league goals in total.

He has one year left to run of a four-year deal, signed after moving from Watford for around £8m. He scored 16 goals in their Championship winning season, highlighting his ability in the second tier.

The 26-year old Czech could be sold by Frank Lampard to fund his own rebuilding as he attempts to find a way up into the top flight also.

The Verdict

Hernandez or Vydra? Really? One scored 21 goals last season and made his team tick, the other has hit 12 in two seasons. If Vydra is within budget, Leeds should sign him. They need goals and they need confirmation that Bielsa's arrival heralds a new era. Buying Vydra would do just that.
