Sheffield Wednesday could be forced into selling Adam Reach in the January transfer window to balance the books, according to journalist, Dom Howson.

Reach has been Wednesday’s standout player during the opening fixtures of the season, with the versatile midfielder scoring some wonderful goals and lighting up Hillsborough.

The 25-year-old has scored four goals and registered two assists in the Championship so far this season, with his goals against Leeds United, West Brom and Middlesbrough all standout efforts.

However, reports have suggested that Wolves are interested in Reach, with his performances catching the eye of some Premier League clubs.

In his latest column for the Sheffield Star, Dom Howson, a reliable journalist covering the Owls, has admitted that Reach’s sale could help solve Wednesday’s financial difficulties.

“Reach is one of the club's prized assets but the reality is selling him in January could go a long way towards solving their financial issues. It was only a couple of months ago that the club were under a transfer embargo and Luhukay was unable to bring in reinforcements for four months.”

Over the course of the summer, Wednesday were hit with a transfer embargo that played havoc to their transfer window and limited Jos Luhukay’s business.

Howson reiterated how Reach’s sale could help Wednesday out financially as he concluded his column: “It is probably not what Wednesdayites want to hear but the days of boom and bust have gone at S6. There is a need to balance the books.”

The Verdict

It’s not what Wednesday’s supporters will want to be hearing, but it is easy to understand Howson’s point here.

However, Wednesday have made a steady start to the season and there will still be hope that they are in promotion contention in early 2019.

If that’s the case, Wednesday might opt to snub interest in Reach and push for promotion themselves in a case of ‘boom and bust’.

It’s a risk, but could be one that pays off.
