Barnsley are still without a manager having seen Paul Heckingbottom depart Oakwell for Yorkshire rivals Leeds United and it is fair to say that the club’s new owners are taking their time to appoint a new man.

Journalist Alan Nixon has tweeted a number of updates on the situation that may interest the club’s fans.

Nixon says that at least one foreign coach is in the frame for the hotseat – a Portuguese manager – who has experience of many footballing roles.

He also revealed that the search is set to go on for a while longer because of the volume of managers they have spoken to and want to speak to – as well as the time it will take to gauge the interest of St Mirren boss Jack Ross and Swansea Under-23 manager Cameron Toshack.

The Verdict

Any Tykes fans expecting a quick appointment will have been disappointed but a delay should always have been expected – the loss of Heckingbottom was a shock and came just as the new hierarchy at Oakwell was finding its feet.

They need to make sure they get the right man as it’s a huge call, given the club finds itself in relegation trouble right now.
