Aston Villa appear to be edging closer to the signing of Leroy Fer, with the midfielder seemingly having a medical ahead of a move to the Midlands.

It’s emerged today that Villa are trying hard to offer Fer a route out of Swansea City, with Alan Nixon reporting that Dean Smith’s side are offering more than teams from Europe.

Now, the reliable journalist has hinted that Fer is undergoing a medical at Villa Park ahead of a move to link up with the Villans.

Fer, 29, has made 26 appearances across all competitions this season for Swansea, impressing on their return to the second-tier.

The Dutchman has been a colossus in central midfield throughout his career, which began with Feyenoord. After a spell with FC Twente, Fer moved to England and has spent time with Norwich and Queens Park Rangers as well as the Swans.

Earlier in January, Fer impressed for the Welsh outfit as they blitzed Villa in the third round of the FA Cup.

Fer completed 90 minutes of the cup clash with Villa as Graham Potter’s side recorded a 3-0 victory.

What could have been his last appearance for Swansea came on Tuesday against Birmingham City, when the midfielder lasted only 16 minutes.

The Verdict

This is great news for Villa as Fer would be a sound addition to their playing squad.

Fer has strength, pace and technical ability, which make him almost the perfect player for a Smith side.

With him alongside the likes of John McGinn and Jack Grealish, Villa’s midfield begins to look a different animal.
