Leeds United’s quest to sign Jerry Mbakogu could be over, with the Whites targeting other forwards.

Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post has provided an update on Twitter, confirming that it has been a while since he heard Mbakogu’s name mentioned, as Leeds work on other targets.

An option is there for Leeds to sign Mbakogu this summer but that will expire on June 30th.

Leeds’ focus in recent weeks has gone on securing a deal for Abel Hernandez, but the Whites are yet to make a major breakthrough yet in their pursuit of the free agent.

Another man on Leeds’ radar is Matej Vydra, who would cost around £10m to lure away from Derby County this summer.

With Leeds’ attention on that proven duo, talk of Mbakogu’s arrival has been minimal, despite Leeds having a £3.5m deal in principle with Capri.

Mbakogu, 25, scored just eight goals in 28 appearances for Capri last season, with just six of those coming in Serie B.

Leeds are yet to secure their first summer signing, as they continue to work on a deal to bring Marcelo Bielsa in as head-coach to replace Paul Heckingbottom, who led the Whites to 13th in the Championship.

The Verdict

Leeds’ supporters were not encouraged at all by links with Mbakogu.

The striker’s record is abysmal and his arrival would be underwhelming. However, links with Hernandez and Vydra will be music to the ears of Leeds’ supporters.

Mediocre isn’t going to be enough at Elland Road next season, especially under Bielsa, should he join.

This latest update indicates that Leeds are having major doubts over Mbakogu.
