Leeds United do have the option to recall Lewie Coyle from his loan spell with Fleetwood Town, but it is not something the Sky Bet Championship outfit have explored yet, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s, Phil Hay.

This morning, Leeds have been handed a crushing blow, with confirmation coming from the Whites that Luke Ayling will miss the remainder of the Championship season, after he was forced into surgery on an ankle injury picked up against Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

Ayling has been Leeds’ first-choice right-back this season, and his injury has led to calls from the club’s supporters to bring Coyle back to Elland Road, after an impressive first six months with Fleetwood in League One.

Coyle has been impressive under Uwe Rosler so far this season, featuring on 27 occasions across all competitions, with some of the 22-year-old’s performances bringing him back to the attention of Leeds’ supporters.

The YEP have now confirmed that Leeds do have the right to recall Coyle at the midpoint of his loan spell in League One, although it is not an option that the Whites have explored despite Ayling’s injury setback.

Leeds are also closing in on the signing of Laurens De Bock, according to the YEP, with the left-back’s arrival likely to allow Gaetano Berardi to move back to right-back.

The Verdict

Ayling’s injury is a blow, and Leeds are sure to consider recalling Coyle now to cushion that blow.

However, in the long-term, Leeds might be better off allowing Coyle to see out his loan with Fleetwood, where he is improving at a fast rate.

If Leeds can get De Bock’s signing over the line, it would probably mean Coyle can remain at the Highbury Stadium.
