Leeds United’s pursuit of Matthew Pennington hasn’t moved forward over the course of the last week, whilst there is interest in Oliver Norwood.

The transfer window closes this week, with Leeds amongst the Championship clubs looking to finalise their business in the coming week.

Central midfield and central defence are areas where Marcelo Bielsa wants to strengthen, with Phil Hay from the Yorkshire Evening Post delivering an update on Leeds’ targets.

Pennington, who spent last season on-loan at Elland Road from Everton, is the centre-back Leeds are looking at closely.

However, Hay’s update confirmed that little progress has been made over the weekend, with the journalist casting doubt over Everton’s desire to send the 23-year-old to a club where first-team football isn’t guaranteed.

Ronaldo Vieira left Leeds last week, with Leeds taking a look at Norwood as a potential replacement.

Norwood has won back-to-back promotions from the Championship over the last two years, firstly with Brighton and Hove Albion, and then Fulham, who he spent last season on-loan with.

The update from the YEP also cast doubt over Lukas Nmecha and his potential arrival, with Leeds previously linked with a move for the young Manchester City attacker.

The Verdict

Leeds’ work this summer has been efficient, but they do need to strengthen this week.

In Pennington and Norwood, they are fishing in the right holes, but need to start pushing on with deals at this late stage of the transfer window.

It was a good start to the season for Leeds, but they need to strengthen again if they are to maintain that.
