Sunderland advanced to the second round of the EFL Cup last night with a 3-1 win against Accrington Stanley.

It wasn't all plain sailing for Jack Ross' side; a Marc McNulty opener was cancelled out on the hour mark by former Leamington striker Colby Bishop, bagging his first goal for the home side from the penalty spot.

For a short while, Sunderland fans felt the anger growing. They were delicately poised at 1-1, a scoreline that they've already seen twice this season in the league. It might have been a tough post-match press conference for Jack Ross, had he not been pulled out of the mire by a familiar face.

On 70 minutes he sent on winger Aiden McGeady and within ten minutes he had restored the Black Cats lead. It settled their nerves and by the end of the game, Charlie Wyke had added a third to send Sunderland into the next round.

The McGeady goal was greeted with rapturous praise on social media, with supporters keen to highlight how important the 33-year-old is for Sunderland, despite his advancing years.

Is he going to be the difference for them this season? Some of these fans seem to think he might be.
