Coventry City appear to have beaten a trio of Championship clubs to the signing of young defender Morgan Williams.

Derby County, Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion have all held an interest in the player but the Sky Blues have nipped in.

According to Pro-Vision Football - the company that manager the player - via The Coventry Telegraph, Coventry have won the race to sign Williams from non-league side Mickleover Sports.

Williams has been playing for Derbyshire-based side Mickleover Sports, who compete in the Northern Premier League - the seventh tier of English football.

But the 18-year-old centre-half has now moved to Coventry after impressing the club during a trial period earlier this year.

In April, Williams spent a week training with the academy side and turned out in an under-23 win against Barnsley.

Williams has recently taken part in Jamie Vardy's V9 Academy, where he caught the eye and now Coventry have swooped to sign him.

The West Midlands outfit faced competition from some Championship sides but they stole a march on their rivals by agreeing a fee with Mickleover Sports, which will be the record received by the club.

The talented teenager played just shy of 20 league games for Mickleover Sports last season and has now secured a move to the League One club.

The Verdict

Williams clearly impressed Coventry during the trial period and they feel that he is worth spending some money on.

The defender is unlikely to immediate go into the first-team but after one or two years with the academy, he'll hope to be knocking on the door.

The fact that Derby, Sheffield United and West Brom were chasing him shows just how highly he is rated despite playing for a lowly non-league side.
