On-loan Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Josh Windass has claimed that he left Wigan Athletic because he did not "see eye to eye" with Latics manager Paul Cook.

Windass joined Wednesday on loan from Wigan for the rest of the season on the final day of the January transfer window, and scored his second goal in three appearances for the Owls in their 3-1 defeat to Derby County on Saturday afternoon.

Taking to Twitter after that defeat to reply to a not exactly complimentary message from one Wigan fan, Windass responded by claiming that the reason behind his departure from the DW Stadium was an apparent difference of opinions between himself and current Wigan boss Paul Cook.

The 26-year-old went on to add that he is "delighted" with his old club's recent resurgence, after Wigan stunned league leaders West Brom with a 1-0 win at The Hawthorns on Saturday, a third straight win for Cook's side which has lifted them out of the relegation zone.

Having joined Wigan from Rangers back in the summer of 2018, Windass made a total of 56 appearances in all competitions for the Latics, scoring nine goals.

There are currently around 18 months remaining on Windass' contract with Wigan, securing his future at the club until the end of next season.

The Verdict

This looks a fair comment from Windass to me.

Not everyone is going to agree on everything in football, and sometimes situations such as this will arise, so you can understand why Windass has moved on in order to prevent an escalation of that particular issue, which would not have helped anybody.

It is good to see that Windass is still backing Wigan in spite of that, and that support is something you imagine most of those at the DW will appreciate.

However, if this loan move is indeed the result of a disagreement between Windass and Cook, it is hard to see the midfielder making anything more than a brief return to Wigan in the summer if the manager is still at the club, which may well be the case if this recent upturn in results keeps the Latics in the Championship.
