It has been revealed that financial restrictions prevented Leeds United from making a significant investment during the January transfer window.

Leeds are looking to win promotion to the Premier League this season, with only nine games standing in the way of Marcelo Bielsa and a shot at English football’s top-flight.

It’s the second season running that Leeds find themselves in such a position, and just as in January 2019, Leeds refused to throw the kitchen sink at their squad in the winter window of 2020.

Elia Caprile, Ian Poveda and Jean-Kevin Augustin were signed, but as a report in the Yorkshire Evening Post points out, Leeds were unable to make a significant investment due to a financial tightrope.

Recently, the club have made their accounts public for the 2018/19 financial year, which has underlined the mine margins the Whites are having to work to as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

A significant amount of money has been spent on Bielsa and his coaching staff, whilst an increase in the wages paid out by Andrea Radrizzani is also evident.

The Verdict

This is no surprise, with the emerging accounts only adding to what we already knew.

Leeds don’t like to deal significantly in January at the best of times, but with money so tight across the Championship, it is very little shock that the club haven’t been able to invest significantly in the winter window.

There will be a hope that Premier League football will result in Leeds being able to loosen their belt a little bit more.
