Nottingham Forest have moved swiftly to replace Aitor Karanka, with former Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill appointed as his replacement.

The 66-year-old, who played 371 games and won the European Cup as a Forest player, ended his five-year spell as Republic of Ireland boss last November.

He returns to a Reds side who are ninth in the Championship, four points outside the play-off places.

But can O'Neill achieve a top six finish for Forest?

We discuss.....

George Dagless

"I am incredibly torn by this.

"I thought O'Neill was an excellent manager not so long ago but he does have a point to prove after what happened with Ireland.

"Forest have better players, though, so maybe it'll work. I really would like to see it because I think he's a great footballing man."

Gary Hutchinson

“Yes, absolutely.

“We always talk about how valuable experience is as a manager, so why would it be any different here?

“He’s been a top manager, aside from his short Celtic stay he’s never taken the easy route either.

“He’ll be a success at Forest.”

Jay Taylor

“Realistically, I can’t see it myself.

“I think Martin O’Neill was a choice to appease the fans after the departure of Aitor Karanka so the fans can stay on the side of the hierarchy at Nottingham Forest.

“It might work out but I think his philosophy does not match that of the players assembled in the summer and it could all go up in smoke once more for Forest.”
