Blackburn Rovers and Liverpool have mutually agreed the termination of the latter’s youngster Leighton Clarkson’s loan contract at Ewood Park, bringing his time at the club to a premature end.
Having been successful with another Reds player in Harvey Elliott last term, with the winger recording seven goals and 11 assists in 41 Championship matches, Jurgen Klopp’s side were persuaded to send another promising youngster in central midfielder Clarkson to Lancashire.
However, he has been the victim of Tony Mowbray’s side’s success this term, with Joe Rothwell and Lewis Travis establishing themselves as Rovers’ pairing in central midfield this season and John Buckley playing regularly in a more advanced role.
Quiz: Can you name which club Blackburn Rovers signed these 20 strikers from?
Currently sitting in the automatic promotion zone with all three midfielders in superb form, Clarkson was limited to just seven league appearances at Ewood Park, mainly being an unused substitute in recent months.
His omission from the matchday squad altogether against Huddersfield Town yesterday afternoon signalled his potential recall with the January window now open – and with both Blackburn and his parent club agreeing that he should return to Anfield – this news was confirmed by the former shortly after their clash with the Terriers.
With the 20-year-old not being able to impress at the second-tier side – how do Rovers fans feel about this departure? Think it’s for the best? Wanted to see him more instead?
We take a look at how a selection of them reacted on Twitter to this development.
Didn't really do anything while he was here. Would rather use that loan spot for somebody who will make more of an impact

Not sure the Championship is the right spot for him. When he did play for us he looked a bit lightweight and was bullied a bit I thought. Probably a better player than we got to see

Real shame, especially as a local lad. Hopefully this frees up the space for another loanee who can come in and offer competition 👌🏽

Shame really. Had a decent first game or 2 but faded pretty quickly. Good luck for the future LC!
