Reading manager Mark Bowen has said the club will do a late fitness test on defender Andy Yiadom ahead of the side's game against Barnsley tomorrow at Oakwell.

The 28-year-old suffered a knock to his knee during the 3-2 defeat to Birmingham City last weekend, and continued to play with the injury during the game despite the discomfort it caused him.

If the Ghana international is not deemed fit to play for the Royals this Wednesday, he could miss the chance to go up against his former side Barnsley, where he spent two years between 2016 and 2018.

Speaking to Berkshire Live, Mark Bowen provided an update on how Yiadom managed to play through the pain barrier against Birmingham City, praising the heart that the defender showed to continue to fight for the shirt.

"He tried hard in the second half carrying the injury and maybe if he was 100 percent fit he'd have made more overlapping runs perhaps," he said.

Bowen is confident that the injury suffered to Yiadom is not serious, despite having to make a last minute gamble on whether he will feature at Oakwell.

"I have no doubt with him he'll be looking forward to the game and he'll be hoping the injury settles down too."

Yiadom has started all but one of Reading's 19 Championship games, playing 1596 minutes. He has scored once and provided three assists in that time.

The Verdict

Bowen will not want to risk the long-term fitness of Andy Yiadom by featuring the defender on Wednesday evening, as the injury could be worse than first feared.

The Ghanaian international will not want to miss the trip to Oakwell, as there it will be a chance to pick up an important three points against his former side.

However, Bowen will know that Yiadom is a key player for Reading and one of the first names on the team sheet, and will not want to make the wrong call as it could be detrimental.
