Reading were defeated comfortably on Saturday as Lee Bowyer's Charlton side ran out 2-0 victors at the Madejski Stadium.

The first-half was fairly even. George Puscas hit the bar for the Royals, before the Romanian missed a guilt edged chance to put Reading in front just before the half-time whistle went.

The Addicks started the second-half strongly and got the win through a deflected Jonathan Leko strike and a calmly taken Lyle Taylor penalty.

Although, it isn't all bad news for Gomes' side who have picked up seven points in their first six games. The Portuguese boss will have learned a lot from the side, who had been unbeaten in their previous three Championship fixtures.

A 3-0 home win over Cardiff was followed up two very good away results. A point at West Brom, before a 2-0 victory at Huddersfield meant that since Gomes had changed the system, the Royals had picked up seven points in just three games.

Saturday's defeat was a reality check for the Reading side and could actually be a welcome loss. Gomes and his coaching team will have found out a lot more about his side from this than the previous three fixtures.

Charlton did an excellent job of closing down the three centre-backs that the Royals lined up with. They didn't allow any time on the ball, and forced Liam Moore, Michael Morrison and Tom McIntyre to play the long-ball on several occasions.

Now Gomes has a chance to work out how to rectify this. He'll also be trying to work out a plan for future fixtures where the Royals go down a goal.

On Saturday, Reading took off both wing-backs for two forwards with 25 minutes remaining in the game. After these changes, the side became very unorganised and that caused the game to become stretched with Lee Bowyer's side eventually scoring again on the counter-attack.

Another key thing for this Reading side is pressure. This may come as a surprise but since the Royals spent money over the summer, expectations have been raised around Berkshire and one would assume that supporters wouldn't be keen on another relegation battle this season.

Gomes must allow his side to thrive on the pressure that new signings bring to the fanbase. He needs to find a way of making sure that his side can manage expectations after stating that the team are 'five points off their target' as the Royals look to find their way back into the Premier League.

It'll be interesting to know how this side will do in the coming weeks, with many of the players still an unknown quantity. After the international break, it'll be interesting to see whether Gomes sticks with the 3-5-2 formation that he's played in recent weeks.
