Former Stoke City and Southampton manager Mark Hughes is not on the Reading shortlist to replace manager Jose Gomes after the Portuguese was sacked on Wednesday.

It was reported by multiple sources that Hughes was in line to step into the Madejski Stadium dug out but Sky Sports News (16:19, 09/10) have now reported that he is not under consideration.

The report also details that the Berkshire club are planning to name their new boss as soon as possible with a tricky home clash with Preston North End just ten days away.

Gomes took over at the Berkshire club during December 2018, taking over from Paul Clement, and guided the Royals to safety last season, lifting the whole club in the process.

Upwards of £10million was splashed in the summer on striking duo George Puscas and Lucas Joao alone with the likes of Michael Morrison, Charlie Adam, Lucas Boye and Matt Miazga all also among those to arrive at Madejski Stadium as well.

But, with just two wins all season and none in their last six, the pressure has begun to mount on the Portuguese with the club have now decided to make a big decision.

The verdict

This will be a big relief to plenty of Reading fans.

Many were angry enough with the decision to sack Gomes. If they were to replace him with a manager of Hughes' style then there would have been serious uproar.

Hughes has his place in football management still, but not for a team like Reading, whose fans are desperate to see a more progressive, exciting approach take hold.
