Championship outfit Reading are set to seal a deal for Aston Villa midfielder Leandro Bacuna, reports The Reading Chronicle.
The 25-year-old moved to Villa Park back in 2013 to end a long association with Dutch outfit Groningen, with whom he made his senior debut back in 2009 before appearing a subsequent 125 times for the club.
And with 17 goals and 14 assists during his stint in the Eredivisie, the Curacao international showed genuine attacking credentials from midfield, yet they haven’t been seen too readily at Villa, with just eight goals and eight assists in 131 matches for the club a disappointing return for a talented player.
Yet it appears that his time at Villa Park is coming to an end, as recent reports suggest that Jaap Stam’s Reading are on the verge of sealing a move for the 25-year-old to bring him to the Madejski Stadium.
The Royals are looking to bounce back in the Championship after falling agonisingly short of a return to the Premier League last season, having lost to David Wagner’s Huddersfield in the play-off final at Wembley on penalties.
And although the Berkshire outfit have lost the influential duo of Ali Al-Habsi and Danny Williams this summer, Dutchman Stam has been busy in the transfer window with the likes of Pelle Clement and Vito Mannone signing for the club, and it appears that Bacuna is set to become the fifth man through the door at the Madejski Stadium in the not too distant future.
The Verdict: Leandro Bacuna played 70 minutes of Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw with Hull City last weekend to suggest that he was very much a part of Steve Bruce’s plans at Villa Park, yet just a few days later it appears that he’s on his way out of the club.
The 25-year-old earned 30 Championship appearances for the Villans last term and was used in several different positions, be it all across the midfield or even at right-back
And this versatility is clearly something that interests Reading boss Jaap Stam, and with the Royals suffering a huge injury crisis just days into the new season, the 45-year-old will likely be hoping to get a deal over the line prior to their clash with Fulham on Saturday.
