Royals manager Steve Clarke travelled to Dublin this week to hold talks with the 29-year-old, who was released by Hull following their relegation from the Premier League.

The Republic of Ireland international is seen as an ideal replacement for Alex Pearce, who is set to join Championship rival’s Derby.

McShane began his career at Manchester United but failed to make a single first-team appearance and was shipped out on loan to Walsall and Brighton before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2006.

A year later, Sunderland paid £2.5m for the Irishman’s services but he only made 24 appearances in two seasons at the Stadium of Light and left to join Hull in 2009 after a successful loan spell.

The defender made over 100 appearances in a six-year spell with the Tigers, scoring three goals.

McShane is currently with the Ireland squad who are preparing to face England on Sunday.
