Reading have moved a step closer in their pursuit of Coventry City striker Marc McNulty, according to HITC

The Sky Blues had previously rejected two bids from the Championship side but it is thought that their latest offer will match Coventry's valuation.

HITC report that the latest fee is an initial £1.2 million with the potential to rise to £1.5 million depending on performances.

McNulty was integral in the Sky Blues' promotion-winning season and playoff triumph, scoring 23 goals in 42 appearances as well as racking up six assists.

The 26-year-old was only signed by Mark Robins at the start of last season on a free transfer after he was released by Sheffield United.

The offer was apparently accepted reluctantly with the £1.2 million offer proving too enticing.

Paul Clement made a new striker his top priority at the start of the season after the lack of goals last season left the Royals in a surprise relegation scrap.

The verdict

This is a brilliant signing for Reading but also a huge blow for the Sky Blues.

The Royals have brought someone in on red-hot form and who is a relentless goalscorer, something they severely lacked last season.

McNulty is a great choice by Clement and is someone the Royals' fans should be excited to see next season.

For Coventry however, losing their most prominent goalscorer is a blow. Even though the fee of £1.2 million is a sizeable amount in League One, they will really struggle to replace McNulty.
