Reading are interested in Carlos de Pena as they look to strengthen their options out wide when the transfer market eventually opens again.

The winger is currently playing for Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv, however he may be a name that some recognise after he signed for Middlesbrough for around £2.5m back in 2015.

Despite his time on Teesside not going to plan, with de Pena mutually agreeing to terminate his contract after two years during which he barely featured, he has done well since moving on.

Initially, the Uruguayan starred back home with Nacional before moving to the Ukrainian capital.

His time in Kyiv has gone well individually too, with the 28-year-old scoring five goals in the current campaign, although the side are third in the table.

And, according to TEAMtalk, another move could be on the cards, as they claim the Royals are one of several Championship sides monitoring the player, with de Pena keen on testing himself in England once again.

Reading are currently in the bottom half of the Championship and they could be set for a busy window as Mark Bowen looks to make his mark on the squad.

The verdict

The obvious concern with this link is that de Pena failed to settle in the UK before and his transfer to Boro was a disaster.

Having said that, he may have matured a lot as a player and a person in the past few years and it's clear that the wide man has a lot of talent and Reading need more creativity and class from the flanks.

Plus, with the former Real Oviedo man having less than two years left on his contract, they may be able to bring him in at a reasonable price.
