Emiliano Martinez was outstanding for Reading during the second half of last season and played a vital role in helping the Royals achieve Championship survival.

When the 26-year-old first arrived at the Madejski Stadium on loan from Arsenal, Reading were in the relegation zone in the second tier, two points from safety.

The goalkeeper went on to make 18 appearances for the Royals and kept five clean sheets, helping the team to pick up some valuable points in their battle to avoid the drop.

The shot-stopper has now returned to Arsenal, but his future at the Emirates Stadium is still uncertain.

The Argentine is unlikely to be Unai Emery's first-choice goalkeeper for next season ahead of Leno, after the German impressed during his first season in English football.

With the experienced Petr Cech retiring, Martinez could become the back-up goalkeeper to Leno, but he also may consider leaving the club, to a team where he will be guaranteed the number one spot.

He admitted during an interview last season that he is unwilling to remain at Arsenal without guaranteed first-team football, and Reading must try take advantage of this situation and try to sign the goalkeeper on a permanent transfer this summer.

Martinez remains determined to make it at Arsenal, but now might finally be the right time for him to move on and a permanent move to Reading would make perfect sense for both parties.

He already knows the club, he has a good relationship with the manager Jose Gomes and is already popular with the supporters at the Madejski Stadium.

If Reading are to survive in the Championship next season, they need a good goalkeeper and Martinez is the perfect option for them.

Within just a few months of arriving at the club, Martinez was able to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship and he has the potential to get even better.

He is a very talented goalkeeper and made some magnificent saves for Reading. He is also good with the ball at his feet and his distribution notably improved throughout his time in the Championship.

If Reading have any ambition, they should try to persuade the goalkeeper to leave Arsenal and begin the next chapter of his career.

Of course, money problems are a fundamental issue at the Berkshire club at the minute, but if they do manage to offload a number of players, Emi Martinez should be one of the first names on the transfer wish-list.
