Reading midfielder linked with summer departure amid interest from Championship club

Reading are set to continue to move players on before the new season gets underway, with Liam Kelly heading for the Madejski Stadium exit door according to Get Reading’s Jonathan Low.

Kelly struggled for a consistent run in the Reading side last season and made just 17 league starts under both Paul Clement and Jose Gomes, although he didn’t feature for the Royals since their defeat to Sheffield United in February.

The 23-year-old had previously been a regular for the Berkshire-based side when Jaap Stam was in charge, but has struggled for game time since the Dutchman was sacked as manager of the club.

It has also been revealed by journalist, Courtney Friday, that Luton Town and Jaap Stam’s Feyenoord are interested in landing his signature before the new season gets underway in August.

Reading are looking to cut the wage bill in the first-team squad, and it’s likely that we’ll see a number of players leave the club in the near future to fund any potential incomings.

Courtney Friday also recently revealed that David Meyler, Chris Gunter, Marc McNulty, Sam Baldock, Garath McCleary, Adrian Popa and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had all been told to find new clubs ahead of pre-season.

According to The Sun, the Royals are under a ‘soft transfer ban’, which means they will have to make any new signings with authorisation from the EFL.

The Verdict:

It’s a deal that makes sense for both parties involved.

Kelly is considerably far down the pecking order in Jose Gomes’ squad, and they need to trim the wage bill ahead of next season, so this is a move that needs to happen for the Royals.

If he was to sign for Luton, then he’ll be keen to recapture his best form, and if he can do that, then Luton will have an excellent player on their hands.
