Reading man Charlie Adam has said that it would be "carnage" if the Championship season was declared null and void as a result of recent events.

As it stands, all EFL fixtures have been postponed until April 3 at the earliest, as well as all Premier League, WSL and all academy and youth team fixtures. The National League have also since followed suit.

There are nine games of the season remaining for most sides in across the three EFL tiers, with promotion and relegation still in the balance for many sides up and down the country.

Although the suspension is currently in place until next month, it still remains to be seen if it is a suitable date to resume proceedings, considering the growing impact the outbreak is having on everyday life.

QUIZ: Can you name the club these 15 Reading players started their career at?

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, the Reading midfielder said that declaring the season null would force many Championship clubs to act.

"There’s only one word and it’s carnage, you know everybody would be throwing legal letters everywhere, he said.

"To then void the league after the games that are left would be crazy so I think you’d have a massive legal case from a lot of the Championship clubs."

Although Reading are currently not in danger of losing out too much with regards to promotion and relegation in the Championship because of their league position, the lack of gate receipts will be affecting the club financially.

Adam added that despite the wishes of a handful of Premier League clubs, the remaining sides in the EFL will be keen to finish the season one way or another.

"It’s easy for the Premier League clubs to say 'well, lets not have a relegation or a promotion, it’s only really the teams that are around the relegation that have found that - everybody else will be saying lets play to finish."

The Verdict

Adam's claims are correct - declaring the season null and void will have many permutations for clubs up and down the country, and many will feel that such a decision would be unjust.

With many Championship clubs losing a significant portion of money per season as it is, the hit in gate receipts at the moment is also bound to have a significant effect on club finances.

However, making a decision on resuming the season will rest with the current public safety guidelines on the outbreak.
