Clarke admits all the fixtures will be tough in the Championship next season

The former West Bromwich Albion manager arrived at the Madjeski at the end of 2014, following the sacking of Nigel Adkins after a disgraceful 6-1 drubbing against Birmingham City at St Andrews.

The Royals had a fantastic run in the FA Cup under his jurisdiction, losing out in the semi-final to Premier League giant's Arsenal, who went on to win it, but nothing he did helped to aid their league form, which saw them slump to a 19th placed finish.

Clarke told the club's official website that he learnt a lot towards the end of last year, and that next season is shaping up to be a toughie, saying: “The league fixtures are the bread and butter, the grind. You start to look at them and you start to think which ones are we going to get our points from? Points from that game, points from that game, every game looks difficult.

“The Championship is a league that I learned a lot about last year. Every game you can look at and it will be a difficult game, but I’m quite confident that the points will come as and when we need them next season.

“The Capital One Cup draw was released the day before - we had a little taste of Wembley last year - and it seems long way away at the moment but this is the first stop on the road to Wembley again.

“It’s going to be difficult game away at Colchester. We’ve got everything to lose but that’s what cup football is all about.”

Clarke revealed this week that he has a couple of deals ready to be pushed over the line in the next couple of weeks, and that he's waiting for the go ahead from Thailand to push them through.
