Reading defender Liam Moore has heaped praise on his teammates for the character they showed in their 1-1 draw with Sunderland, report the club's official website

The Royals looked set to return to their losing ways until James Chester slid in to try and nick the ball from new signing Josh Sims in the 92nd minute.

But the Villa captain took the man before the ball and gave Sam Baldock the chance to nick a point for Paul Clement's side which he did with aplomb.

"I really think we deserved the point at least," Moore told the club's official website.

"The character was brilliant just to keep going, we had to throw people forward and there were a lot of tired people out there in the end. But we kept going and got a reward."

The 25-year-old joined Reading from Leicester City in 2016 and has been a crucial member of their defence ever since, making 100 appearances in just over two years.

Villa had taken the lead through experienced fullback Ahmed El Mohamady on the hour mark after a brilliant cross from new signing Anwar El Ghazi.

But the Royals never gave in and forced Orjan Nylund into some terrific saves in the Villa goal before finally breaking past him from the spot.

The verdict

Moore is correct to be impressed and happy with the character Reading showed in this match.

We saw last season with Sunderland what a lack of fight and passion gets you so for the fans to see their side battling until the end will be a real boost for a side tipped for the drop.

Now, they have to build on that and improve for the upcoming fixtures.
