Reading FC legend Phil Parkinson has been backed by Dave Edwards for the managerial vacancy at the Madejski Stadium, with the midfielder praising the job he’s doing across the Championship with Bolton Wanderers.

After parting company with Paul Clement last week, Reading are on the lookout for a new manager to guide them to safety this season after a difficult start to the Championship campaign.

A number of names have been thrown into the hat, including Parkinson, who made over 350 appearances for Reading during his playing days.

Now, current midfielder Edwards has discussed the possibility of the 51-year-old returning to the club in management.

"Phil Parkinson is a huge fans' favourite here," the 32-year-old told the Totally Football League Show podcast. "Every time he comes to Reading with Bolton he gets a rapturous reception.

"He's doing wonderful things at Bolton when you think of the things he's going through.

"He would be a shrewd appointment by the club. I'm sure there are plenty of people who see the club as a good one to come and manage."

Reading currently find themselves battling with Parkinson’s Bolton in the Championship’s fight for survival, with both clubs enduring a tough start to the 2018/19 campaign.

Only goal difference separates the two sides at the moment, with the managerless Royals currently preparing for a weekend clash with Rotherham United.

Parkinson, should he remain Bolton boss until the weekend, is taking on Leeds United.

The Verdict

There’s clearly a lot of people hoping that Parkinson will get the Reading job, with support even coming from within the current playing squad.

It’d be a bold appointment because Parkinson’s Championship record isn’t outstanding, but his arrival would probably be backed by most fans, which could help pick up results.

You’ve got to admit, though, there are better options out there.
