Reading want to sign David Meyler on a free transfer, according to HITC Sport.

Meyler was recently released by Hull City and is available as a free agent this summer, with Reading ready to make a move for him.

The 28-year-old had been with Hull for six years, having joined the club from Sunderland in 2012.

During his time at the KCOM Stadium, Meyler played nearly 200 games, scoring 19 goals and featuring in three Premier League campaigns.

He twice won promotion with Hull to the top flight, although he was also twice relegated with the club.

But now the 20-cap Republic of Ireland is interesting Reading, who want to snap him up on the cheap this summer.

Paul Clement is now ready to dip into the transfer market and put his own personal stamp on this Reading squad, with Meyler identified as an early addition to join right-back Andy Yiadom at the Madejski Stadium.

Meyler can play anywhere across the midfield and has also operated in defence before in his career too.

The former Cork City man is likely to attract plenty of interest from the Championship this summer but Reading are hoping to beat off their rivals to his signature by moving swiftly.

The Verdict

Although Meyler offers versatility, experience and reliability in midfield, this is still a very underwhelming transfer target for Reading.

He is the definition of solid but unspectacular; he works hard and keeps things simple but he lacks the quality to turn a game on its head single-handedly.

In order to progress up the league table, Reading need a mixture of these reliable workhorses and other players who will add the flair.

If Meyler is brought in alongside a couple of other exciting signings, then he could be a decent addition but if he has been signed as the man to make things happen, then next season could be a long campaign for Reading fans.
