According to Alan Nixon, Reading are leading the race to sign Chris Martin, with the Royals looking to secure a loan deal for the Derby County striker.

A host of clubs are tracking Martin, with Nixon confirming on Twitter that it is likely that the best offer will land the striker’s signature this month, with his days at Derby County looking numbered.

Martin finds himself competing with the likes of David Nugent and Sam Winnall for a starting berth at the Pride Park Stadium, and has featured in the starting XI on just five occasions so far this season in the Sky Bet Championship, scoring one goal.

Reading appear keen to add the 29-year-old to their squad this month, with Jaap Stam looking to salvage the Royals’ campaign, which is spiralling out of control and is a stark contrast to last year’s promotion push.

Stam’s side currently sit 18th in the Championship table after 26 fixtures, just four points clear of Burton Albion, who occupy the final relegation spot.

Reading travel to Hull City on Saturday afternoon, with that fixture shaping up into a massive clash between two sides hovering dangerously above the relegation zone.

The Verdict

Martin is exactly the type of player Reading need this month, and if Stam can seal a deal, it will feel like a major coup.

Of course, Martin has struggled at times this season, but over recent years, he has shown his quality in the Championship.

Reading are in a difficult position, but this potential transfer would give everyone associated with the club a lift.
