The wonderful world of Financial Fair Play (FFP) has had to be considered by clubs across Europe in the past couple of years.

It’s no secret that Reading will be severely limited in what they can do in this transfer window after making a significant loss in the 2017/18 season.

There was reason for optimism when Ron Gourlay was appointed as CEO back in 2017.

His experience at top level European clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea was something that he could bring to the table. However, his tenure at the Madejski Stadium was a miserable one. Almost two years down the line, the club is in danger of breaching FFP after mismanagement under his stewardship.

Reading manager Jose Gomes has made it clear that the Royals will not be able to bring anyone in until they sell players. The current wage bill at Reading is not sustainable with the revenue that the club are currently bringing in and are no doubt on course to make another loss, if they don’t sell numerous players this summer.

This is the perfect opportunity for Reading to regain their identity, as a club that gives youth a sufficient chance.

According to Football Insider, Wolves are planning a move for promising England youth international Danny Loader. Surely it would be wise to hold on to Loader, he is a promising player whose value will only increase with more Championship experience with Reading.

Instead, players like Marc McNulty and Sam Baldock should be higher up on the list of players to sell.

We’ve seen both players make little impact at the club. Another important consideration is the fact that McNulty and Baldock are on first team wages, when they’re not getting a lot of first team football.

The Royals can take robust action against FFP if we start offloading senior professionals who are on first team wages, but do not play a crucial part in the squad.

Chris Gunter and Garath McCleary are just two of those players.

Whilst having Yiadom and Gunter makes our right back spot very strong in terms of squad depth, there’s no reason why Tennai Watson or Teddy Howe couldn’t make the step up to compete with Yiadom.

Arguably, both Vito Mannone and Sam Walker may not be needed at any point during next season if we sign a new number one goalkeeper. Luke Southwood has shown promise in numerous loan spells away from Reading.

There have been calls from Reading fans on social media for the young shot-stopper to have a role in the Royals’ first team this season. Lewis Ward, who has EFL experience, could also fight for the understudy spot in the senior team next season.

The emergence of Andy Rinomhota last season has left Royals fans begging for more youth products to be given a chance.

Even the attacking trio of Josh Barrett, Michael Olise and Danny Loader was incredibly promising to watch against Birmingham City in the final game of last season. This is our future.

What’s my message to the decision makers at the Madejski Stadium? Promote youth, it could go a long way to helping the players form an even deeper connection to the supporters.

Solidarity was a key reason of our survival last season. We need to replicate that next season. The future of the club matters.
