Reading are interested in signing goalkeeper David Cornell from League Two side Northampton Town, HITC have reported.

The Royals are thought to be keen to sign a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closes next week, with 19-year-old Everton loanee Joao Virginia currently the only contender to Sam Walker for the number one spot at the Madejski Stadium.

According to the latest reports, Cornell has emerged as a potential target to fulfil that role after his impressive form for Northampton last season, as they finished 15th in their first season back in the fourth tier following relegation from League One the season before.

Cornell has made a total of 70 appearances for The Cobblers since joining from Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2016, and the 28-year-old has just 12 months remaining on his contract at Sixfields, meaning Northampton could be forced to sell the former Wales youth international now, in order to avoid losing him for nothing this time next year.

The Verdict

I think this could be a good signing for Reading.

Considering their current options, it does look as though a new goalkeeper would be well worth targeting for Jose Gomez' side.

Given last season was his first as a regular for Northampton, there won't be much scrutiny on him around the club's relegation from League One the year before, and his previous time with Wales at youth level, as well as with Swansea earlier in his career, certainly suggests he has the pedigree to compete in the Championship.

With his contract at Northampton set to expire next summer, this does seem to be a deal that Reading should be able to afford, so it could prove to be something well worth pursuing for the Royals.
