It's set to be an interesting month ahead for Reading, as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for a higher placed finish in the Championship next season.

The Royals finished 20th in the league table last term, but will be hoping to build on some impressive performances in the second-half of their league campaign under Jose Gomes' guidance.

It's no secret that the club are looking to trim the wage bill before the new season gets underway, with a number of first-team players likely to be heading for the Madejski Stadium exit door in the near future according to journalist, Courtney Friday.

Gomes' side are currently on a pre-season training camp, where they will come up against a number of teams as they look to build their match fitness ahead of their season opener against Sheffield Wednesday.

With just under a month until the new Championship season gets underway, we take a look at what the first-team squad have been up to on their pre-season tour in Spain.

Yakou Meite

Meite was hugely impressive in his breakthrough season in English football last term, and he'll be hoping to build on that momentum heading into next year's league campaign.

He scored twice in their 10-0 win against Gibraltar United, and will be hoping to hit the ground running when Reading start their season against Sheffield Wednesday in August.

Meite took to Instagram to look forward to their pre-season friendly against Spanish giants, Sevilla on Saturday.

Tom McIntyre

The young Royals centre-back could be set for an interesting season ahead, with Jose Gomes  including him in the first-team squad's pre-season plans.

He scored in their pre-season win over Gibraltar United, and will be hoping that he can do all he can to impress the Reading boss to convince him to hand him a starting spot alongside Liam Moore in the heart of the defence.

McIntyre recently enjoyed some time away from the training pitch though, as he was pictured playing Fifa with Reading team-mates, Josh Barrett and Gabriel Osho.

Joao Virginia

Virginia only signed for the Royals on loan from Everton on Thursday evening, but he's already been getting stuck into their pre-season preparations.

The goalkeeper will be hoping that he can make an instant impact at the Madejski Stadium, as he has big shoes to fill between the sticks, with Arsenal's Emiliano Martinez putting in a number of impressive performances whilst on loan with the Gomes' side last season.

This is his first loan spell in England, and he'll be keen to make a name for himself, in order to challenge for a first-team spot at Everton in the future.

Danny Loader

Loader is one of the brightest prospects at Reading, and we're starting to see glimpses of his quality in front of goal in recent months.

He netted his first professional goal against Middlesbrough late into last season, and he's clearly a player full of confidence, as he netted a hat-trick in Reading's 10-0 win over Gibraltar United recently.

The youngster has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Chelsea and Juventus earlier this year (according to Goal), but Reading will be hoping they can do everything they can to keep hold of their striker.
