With the new season drawing closer, Reading FC will be hoping to go one better than last season.

Despite few expecting Reading to be successful last year, Jaap Stam arrived at the helm and guided the Royals to a top six finish before cruelly missing out on promotion by the narrowest of margins.

Reading lost on penalties to Huddersfield Town in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, consigning them to another year in the second tier.

However, they have managed to retain Jaap Stam and keep the core of their squad, meaning that they will be aiming for another promotion challenge this season.

Three players have come in this summer: Vito Mannone has replaced Ali Al-Habsi between the sticks, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has added some competition up front and Pelle Clement has joined from Ajax to give Stam options in midfield.

Before the end of the transfer window, Reading could still do with another midfielder to replace Danny Williams and possibly one more defender.

However, they should also make another audacious swoop at bringing in Celtic star Tom Rogic.

Rogic would certainly be a marquee signing for the Royals - his undoubted quality would have them competing at the top of the Championship table.

Reading have been linked with the Celtic star before.

Predominantly a number 10, the 37-cap Australia international can also feature out wide and has even played as a striker for Celtic before.

With 12 goals in 37 games last season and 2 in 2 this term, the 24-year-old is a goal threat from midfield and he is still improving.

Having options of Rogic, Clement, Popa, Beerens, McCleary and Harriott in the attacking midfield regions would give them a massive edge over the other sides competing for promotion.
