Reading have reportedly offered a deal to former Stoke midfielder, Charlie Adam according to journalist, Courtney Friday.

The Scotsman has been a free agent since his contract with the Potters came to an end at the end of last year's campaign.

It has previously been claimed by reputable journalist, Alan Nixon, that Blackpool are also said to be keen on landing his signature in the near future.

But the prospect of playing in the Championship for another season, could be too tempting to turn down for Adam, who will be hoping to have his future resolved at the earliest of opportunities.

He made 12 league appearances for Stoke last season, but was deemed surplus to requirements in Nathan Jones' squad, as they turned their attentions to next term.

The Sun had reported that Reading were under a 'soft transfer ban', which limited their transfer activity, but Jose Gomes recently revealed to BBC Berkshire that the transfer embargo had been lifted.

The Royals boss will be hoping that he can add some much-needed depth and experience to his squad, especially in midfield, as it's an area where they are light on options heading into the new season.

Andy Rinomhota is one of the few senior options available to Gomes, and Adam could be lined up as his potential midfielder partner in the near future.

The Verdict:

I'm really not convinced that this would be a good signing for the Royals.

I'm not doubting that they need experience in their team next season, but Adams is well past his best in my opinion, and there are better options out there for Jose Gomes' side.

If he was to arrive, he would only block the development of a younger player being given a chance to showcase their potential for Reading.
