Reading are in serious trouble towards the bottom of the second tier table, with just four points separating the Royals from a place in the bottom three.
One win from their last eleven Championship outings has seen Jaap Stam’s side plummet towards the relegation spots, and a continuation of their current run is likely to see the Berkshire-based side demoted to the third tier this season.
Looking for a boost, Stam has whisked his squad off to sunnier climes in an attempt to install a renewed vigour and belief within the squad, with defender Chris Gunter explaining the benefits in an interview with the club’s official website.
“There’s no hiding that recently we haven’t got the results we wanted,” Gunter said. “Even though our job is to stay upbeat and look forward, sometimes to get away and refresh the mind somewhat does help.
“I’m sure when we go back home and get back to work a couple of days before the Forest game, hopefully there’s a little bit more of a spring in our step.”
Stam is exploring all avenues in his attempt to inspire his side to a run of good form, and an escape from the miserable British weather to the sunny shores of Spain could be the Dutchman’s final ploy between now and the end of the season.
Reading’s form is atrocious and that of a relegation candidate, and an upturn is needed on Tuesday when they travel to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest.
Both sides are in the midst of terrible runs, and Reading must make sure it is them that ends their barren streak at The City Ground, or risk falling further into the mire that is the relegation dogfight.
