Reading find themselves in a dubious position with key loanees having returned to their parent clubs and major gaps in the first-team squad, manager Jaap Stam does have a task on his hands.

The Dutchman is currently being linked with a wide range of jobs in this country and abroad, but remains adamant to remain at the Madejski - which is one of the few things supporters can be positive about.

Stam has also publicly stated his intention for another promotion push next season and to do that he needs a reliable attack, starting off with acquiring recently-released forward Fraizer Campbell.

The 29-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements at Crystal Palace, making just thirteen appearances in the 2016/17 campaign, and, subsequently, let go by the Premier League outfit.

Campbell has never been particularly prolific in the top-flight, however, the Championship is where he thrives and a return to the second-tier is the best option available for the one-time capped England international.

His best season came almost a decade ago when on loan at Hull City, in this division, from Manchester United and bagged 15 goals in 34 outings; which was enough for the Tigers to desperately attempt to sign him up.

With Yann Kermorgant not getting any younger at the age of 35 years-old, Lewis Grabban returning to AFC Bournemouth following a loan spell at Reading and Dominic Samuel still not up to scratch yet, the Royals really do need a new forward.

Fraizer Campbell could be that man and change Jaap Stam's fortunes from Play-Off miserly to automatic promotion chasers.
