Reading defender Tom McIntyre has insisted that his side have so much more to give following their 2-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at the Madejski Stadium last weekend.

Despite entering the clash brimming with confidence having secured back-to-back victories over Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle, the Royals' inability to take their chances ultimately led to their demise.

Whilst George Puscas was unlucky to see his effort crash off the bar during the opening stages of the clash, he would have been disappointed not to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time as he fired straight at Charlton keeper Dillon Phillips with the goal gaping.

After surviving Reading's onslaught, Charlton produced a superb performance in the second period as strikes from Jonathan Leko and Lyle Taylor resulted in them securing a priceless three points on their travels.

Speaking to the Reading Chronicle about the Royals' slip-up, McIntyre said: "Once they scored we were on the back-foot.

"We pressed higher up the pitch and we were more open at the back.

"We didn't deserve to lose 2-0."

The defender later hinted that the best is yet to come from Jose Gomes' side by adding: "It's gutting for everyone because you want to win every game, but we have to remember that we're still a new team.

"There's so much potential in this team and we have so much more to give."

McIntyre will be looking to help Reading get back to winning ways in the Championship when his side head to the Riverside Stadium on September 14th to face Middlesbrough.

The Verdict

Whilst losing to Charlton was unquestionably a blow for the Royals, there is no reason why they cannot go on to achieve a relative amount of success in the second tier over the coming months if their recent exploits are anything to go by.

Having secured seven points from their last four games, it could be argued that Reading have already demonstrated more than enough to suggest that they should comfortably be able to better the 20th place finish they achieved last season.
