Nelson Oliveira is edging closer to a move to Greek side, AEK Athens according to a recent report from the Reading Chronicle.

The report claims that Oliveira has been told he is free to leave Norwich City, as they look to trim the wage bill heading into next season in the Premier League.

The forward spent the second-half of last season on loan with Jose Gomes' side, and certainly played his part in their Championship survival.

In total, the 27-year-old made nine appearances for the Royals, scoring three goals, as they finished 20th in the league table.

There were hopes that Reading would make his loan move a permanent one at the earliest of opportunities, but they've been restricted in the transfer market recently.

It was previously reported by The Sun, that Reading are under a 'soft transfer ban' and will have to get permission from the EFL to sign any players before the new season.

Any potential new signings are unlikely to arrive until more of the first-team squad have left the club, as Gomes looks to trim the wage bill as soon as possible.

Reading get their new season underway against Sheffield Wednesday, in what will be a fiercely-competitive battle between the two teams at the Madejski Stadium.

The Verdict:

This is hugely frustrating for Reading supporters as the new Championship season edges closer.

They need more depth in their side, and Oliveira would certainly have provided them with that, and he made himself a real fans favourite in his brief spell in Berkshire last term.

He's already shown his quality in front of goal, and would have been an excellent option to have for Jose Gomes' side, so it's an irritating blow for the Royals.
