Reading have announced that they have completed the signing of defender, Michael Morrison on a two-year-deal.

Morrison has been a free agent after his deal with Birmingham City came to an end upon the conclusion of last year's campaign.

The experienced defender captained Birmingham last season, and will add some much-needed depth to the Reading defence, ahead of the new Championship season.

In total, Morrison made 183 appearances for the Blues, and he'll be hoping to pick up where he left off, after being a key player for Birmingham for a number of seasons.

Reading are likely to be adding to their squad in the near future, with Jose Gomes' looking to move a number of the first-team squad on before the season starts in August.

It's been previously reported by The Sun, that the Royals are under a 'soft transfer ban', and will have to get permission from the EFL to sign any players before the transfer window closes.

Morrison could be in line to make his competitive debut for the Royals on the opening day of the season, when they host Sheffield Wednesday at the Madejski Stadium.

The Verdict:

This is a smart move by Jose Gomes.

Reading desperately needed depth in defensive areas heading into next season, with Liam Moore being the only recognised senior option available to Gomes in the centre of defence.

Morrison is experienced at this level, and I think he is the ideal partner for Moore in defence next season, and his leadership qualities will be of use to the younger members of the Reading squad as well for years to come.
