Reading are close to signing Chris Martin who will arrive on a loan until the end of the season from Derby County.

After the Rams secured a deal for Cameron Jerome earlier in the window it appeared the Scotland international was no longer needed and he has been linked with a move to several Championship sides.

The likes of Wolves, Fulham and particularly Sunderland have been suggested as potential destinations but according to John Percy of the Telegraph, he is likely to be a Reading player.

That will be a big boost for Jaap Stam who has been searching for a striker for most of the window.

His side secured a massive win against Burton Albion last night to ease any relegation fears but the former Manchester United man knows they need more firepower if they are to climb up the table.

Martin has been prolific in the second tier over the years but has struggled so far this season, with one goal from 23 appearances although many of those came as a sub. Ironically, that one goal came against Reading in November.

The Verdict

This would be a very good signing for Reading as they are desperate for more options up front.

Martin can play with his back to goal and is capable enough on the ball to play the way Reading want whilst acting as the focal point for the team.

The Royals needed a new striker to come in and Martin is about as good as they could have hoped for at this stage of the season.
