An abysmal run of results for The Royals' with four successive defeats in the Sky Bet Championship has resulted in Brian McDermott coming under some heavy pressure of late.

However, the 55-year-old is insisting that he does not work under constant fear of the sack.

Pressure started building on Royals’ boss McDermott following after a run of four straight defeats in the Championship, with the latest coming on Tuesday night when Hull gained all three points in a 2-1 victory at Madejski Stadium.

There are some supporters who believe McDermott should be replaced, with the former Premier League outfit currently stuck down in 15th place with no chance of moving up the table this season but he is adamant he can turn things round in the summer if given the opportunity.

He said to Get Reading: “Do I fear it (the sack)? I don’t fear it; I don’t fear stuff like that. It’s completely out of my control.

“It’s never something I concern myself about. I know this football club really well and I believe I know what it takes to be at the top end of this division.

“If I get support and everyone rallies round and we go in the same direction, then we’ve got a chance of being really competitive next season.”

McDermott returned to Reading for a second spell back in December as replacement for Steve Clarke, who was reportedly interested in the Fulham job and is the club’s third manager in as many years.

McDermott has called for patience as he looks to reshape a team that has struggled in recent seasons.

“It’s been similar for the past two years,” he said. “You had Nigel (Adkins), then Steve, now you have me here.

“From a football club’s point of view of you, turning managers over constantly - which seems to be the norm - is not a great idea. It’s not a good formula.

“Results wise it’s not conducive for getting stability and good results.”

Whether or not Reading decide to part ways with the man who took them to the Premier League just four short years ago in 2012 is yet to be seen, however only time with tell if Reading will go in search of their fourth manager in almost four years.
