Reading have had their fair share of players that are fondly remembered for their contributions to the club over the years.

One of them is Jamie Cureton, who played a starring role in their promotion-winning season back in the 2001/02 campaign in Division Two.

The Royals needed a draw or a win against Brentford to secure promotion on the final day, but it was the Bees that took the lead after 51 minutes through Martin Rowlands.

Brentford would have been promoted automatically if they had held on, but Cureton struck with just 13 minutes remaining in the game to salvage a point for Reading, which saw them beat the Bees to the final automatic promotion place in Division Two.

Today marks 18 years to the day since Cureton's equaliser, with a number of Reading fans taking to social media to look back at that famous day.

Cureton took to Twitter to reminisce over that memorable day, and labelled the fans as 'unbelievable', which is certain to go down well with the Madejski Stadium faithful.

Reading are now playing their football in the Championship under the management of Mark Bowen, and will be hoping they can finish this year's campaign strongly when football returns later this year.

The Verdict:

What a player he was for the Royals.

The promotion-winning season in the 2001/02 campaign is one that the club's supporters will remember like it was yesterday. Cureton played a key role in that season as well, and it was fitting that he scored the crucial goal to get them over the line on the final day against Brentford.

It's a shame that he didn't stick around with the Royals for longer than he did, as I think he could have gone on to become a legend at the Madejski Stadium.
