According to Sky Sports, Reading are interested in the possibility of taking Chris Martin on-loan from Derby County, with the Rams seemingly looking to offload the striker this month.

Derby moved to add Cameron Jerome to their strikeforce late last night, with the Rams announcing the striker’s arrival from Norwich City, which has pushed Martin further down the pecking order at the Pride Park Stadium.

Reading are interested in handing Martin a route out of Derby, with Jaap Stam’s side one of a number of Championship clubs to have the 29-year-old on their radar at the mid-point of the January transfer window.

So far this season Martin has made just five Championship starts under Gary Rowett, scoring just once and finding himself behind the likes of David Nugent and Sam Winnall.

Stam's side have struggled in attack this season, with Yann Kermorgant, the man who spearheaded Reading’s promotion push last season, also having just one goal to his name this year, whilst Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has struggled to make a major impact since his arrival at the Madejski.

Bodvarsson has three Championship goals, but trebled his tally for the club last night, as Stam’s side stormed into the FA Cup fourth-round, beating Stevenage 3-0 thanks to the Icelandic striker’s hat-trick.

The Verdict

Martin would be a strong addition to Reading’s squad, but the Royals will expect to face tough competition in the race to sign him – such is the player’s quality.

Kermorgant and Bodvarsson have struggled to make a huge impact for Reading in the Championship, and despite the latter’s recent heroics in the FA Cup, another striking addition would be welcome.

Reading are sitting 18th in the Championship table, and the addition of a player like Martin could be the catalyst for a revival.
