Reading duo set to be axed as Paul Clement eyes a future without them

Reading pair Joey van den Berg and Yann Kermorgant are set to leave the club this summer, according to The Championship News.

Both players are not in Paul Clement’s plans for the upcoming season and they will be let go, despite both having one year left to run on their current contract.

Clement has left both men out of their opening two pre-season friendlies as they edge closer to the exit door.

Kermorgant, formerly of Leicester City, Charlton Athletic and Bournemouth, joined Reading in January 2016, scoring three goals in his first half-season at the Madejski Stadium.

The Frenchman then enjoyed a prolific campaign in 2016/17, scoring 19 goals in 48 games but he only found the net twice in 27 games last term.

The 36-year-old is heading for the exit door and he is likely to be joined by van den Berg.

The 32-year-old had played his whole career in Holland before moving to Reading in summer 2016 and he has since played 68 games for the club.

The Dutch holding midfielder is also close to the exit door.

The Verdict

Losing these two will not be major losses for Reading.

They have snapped up McNulty and he is an upgrade on Kermorgant if he can replicate his form two divisions up.

van den Berg will be more of a loss but Clement has a clear direction for the future which does not involve him.
